    Description

For sale is a Foulis Model 3 mashie niblick made by A.G. Spalding in their Gold Medal Series, which were made between 1905 until around 1918 when they introduced their Kro-Flite Model clubs. After James Foulis invented his mashie niblick, he  had to pay someone to manufacture his club heads. The big manufacturers in 1904 were BGI, MacGregor, Canby and Spalding. I have heard, but can't verify, Spalding made his first heads for his shop. Those club heads had no Spalding markings on them, only his name and Cleek marks. This club was made later by Spalding. It has several Spalding cleek marks on the club head, including the accurate arrow pointing to the rear of the club face, the hammer brand mark on the toe, two flower marks and the Spalding gold medal oval. It also has licensed patent date, Dec.19,1905. Finally the model number 3 is stamped beneath the oval. The club has a smooth face and is concave like the original models designed by James Foulis. The shaft is stamped A.G. Spalding & Bros. over Gold Medal. The club has a period replacement grip and newer whipping. There are a few gaps in the grip due to shrinkage not shown in the pictures. The club has the usual ding marks from play and banging other clubs while in the golf bag. Overall, the club is in very nice condition. Pete Georgiady values this club at 0.00, making it a collectable club. It also could be a gutty play club with its smooth face.
The club is 37 1/2 " long and has swing weight of D-3. The club has approximately 45 degrees of loft.
The club head has been cleaned and oiled to prevent further rust. The shaft has been cleaned and oiled with tung oil to prevent the wood from drying out. The grip has been cleaned and has been coated with neatsfoot oil to keep it supple. This club has play potential if the club head was removed from the shaft and repined and a new grip was installed.
