    Description

This listing is for a set of 3 matching antique vintage LEFT HANDED wood shafted woods from the early 1930's. Included are a matching Driver, Brassie and Spoon. All are marked MacDonald Smith Hand Made on the crowns. Marked Drive 61, Brassie 62 and Spoon 63 on the soleplates. MacDonald Smith was one of the famous golfing Smith brothers (Alex, William and MacDonald) from Carnoustie Scotland who came to the US in the late 1890's. Their father, John Smith, came over a little later and was the pro at Diablo in CA. Both Alex and William were U S Open winners. MacDonald was a fine player in his own right, perhaps the best player of the era never to win a major. These clubs were made by the Link-Lyon Co of Nashville, TN. MacDonald was on their staff and they had the rights to use his name. Included with their specs are the 43 1/4" long 11* loft E 1 swingweight Driver, the 43 1/4" long 15* loft E 2 swingweight Brassie and the 42 1/2' long 19* Loft D 4 swingweight Spoon. These clubs have never been altered and these are the specs as made which is very unusual. The heads are in good clean condition and the finish appears original and quite presentable. Yes they do have the expected minor play signs. Please look at the many zoom pictures for a better idea of condition. The shafts are all the old original hickories. They are marked Monarch which was Link-Lyon's shaft line. They are also marked Reg No 205 on the reverse side which shows they were made as a matching set. Rare indeed to find a 3 club matching set of woods that has stayed together for all these years. I don't believe I have ever seen such a left handed set in almost 40 years of collecting. The shafts are all straight and crack free. They feel like a regular flex to me. The grips are all the original matching sueded long leather wraps. They too are in surprisingly good condition. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a LEFT HANDED matching wood set with good play specs if you are considering playing with them. Great collectible.
If you are considering playing with these clubs, while I see no issues with this hickory shafts (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These old hickory shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee hickory shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old hickory shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old hickory shafted wood with a hard range ball.
Shipping in the US is calculated and based on an 6 pound 48"x6"x6" box. The further you are from me in NC the more shipping will be-that is the way the carriers charge. Shipping to foreign countries will be via Express Mail, is much higher and is also calculated. Because of the high value there is a handling fee. eBay also collects sales tax.
